Multi-Channel Demand Forecasting: Shopify Best Practices

By Forstock Team · Last updated May 25, 2026

Centralize multi-channel sales, track MAPE and lead times, and automate reorder points to reduce stockouts and excess inventory.

One Forecast, Many Channels

If you sell on Shopify plus Amazon, Faire, TikTok Shop, or wholesale, you have a forecasting problem most teams don't realize they have. Each channel pulls from the same inventory pool, but most brands forecast each one in isolation — or worse, only forecast Shopify and let the rest run on guesswork.

The result: hero SKUs sell out on Amazon while sitting on the shelf for your Shopify store, or vice versa.

What "Multi-Channel" Forecasting Means

A proper multi-channel forecast:

  1. Consolidates demand signals from every channel into a unified per-SKU view
  2. Respects channel-specific seasonality (Amazon spikes on Prime Day; Shopify spikes on BFCM)
  3. Allocates inventory by margin — not just by which channel sold it last
  4. The Metric That Matters: MAPE

Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) tells you how far off your forecast was, on average. The lower the MAPE, the more accurately you're predicting demand.

  • MAPE under 20% is excellent for SKU-level forecasting
  • 20–35% is workable for most brands
  • Above 50% means your forecast is doing more harm than good

Track MAPE per SKU and per channel. The channels with the worst MAPE are usually where you're bleeding the most cash.

Lead Times Are Channel-Specific Too

Amazon FBA wants inventory weeks in advance. Wholesale buyers expect ship dates. Shopify customers expect "available now." Your reorder logic has to account for all of them — feeding the right channel at the right time.

How to Get Started

Start by exporting 12 months of unit sales per SKU per channel. If you're not tracking that, fix it first. Everything else builds on top.
